2025 Regional Image Salons

Every year, I look forward to the Professional Photographers of Canada Image Competitions. It’s one of those moments that makes my heart race, the anticipation of sending in images I’ve poured myself into, the waiting for results, and the mix of nerves and joy when the judging begins. This year I entered 3 regions, Ontario, British Columbia, and my Home region, Prairie. I did not enter Alberta, as I had the pleasure of judging it, my first Regional Judging experience! This year brought me a full spectrum of outcomes: two images that were Not Accepted, three that were Accepted, four that earned Merits, and three that achieved the incredible level of Excellence.

I’ll be honest, hearing those Not Accepted results stings at first. No one likes to see their work fall short of the standard they were hoping for. But here’s the truth: those are often the images that teach me the most. The feedback from the judges pushes me to see my work through new eyes. It’s a reminder that growth lives in the uncomfortable moments, and that failure isn’t really failure, it’s direction. Those two images will likely become the seeds of something stronger next year.

On the other hand, the Accepted, Merit, and especially the Excellence results are such an incredible affirmation. A Merit means that an image rises above the standard—it has impact, story, and polish. An Excellence means that everything came together at the highest level, that the story I wanted to tell came across with power, grace, and artistry. To receive not just one, but multiple Excellences this year fills me with so much gratitude and excitement. These results are little markers on the path that remind me of how far I’ve come, and how much more there is to create.

But here’s what I love most about competition, it isn’t about ribbons or bragging rights. It’s about being brave enough to put your work forward, to hear the critiques, to grow, and to celebrate with a community of photographers who are all chasing the same passion. Each year, the process makes me better, sharper, and more inspired. So yes, this year had its highs and lows, but that’s what makes it beautiful. I’ll celebrate the Excellences with a big smile, study the Not Accepteds with curiosity, and keep creating with a heart that’s eager to learn. Because at the end of the day, photography is about more than results, it’s about telling stories that matter and pouring myself into the art I love.

Here’s to growth, courage, and the thrill of the journey.

Now I will sit back and eagerly away the Images that have been selected as Finalists for Multiple Best in Class Awards! See you out there!
